Located at 219 West Liberty Street, the Sumter County Genealogical Society is housed in the historic Carnegie Library. The Carnegie was built in 1917 and used as the Sumter County public library until 1968.

The Genealogical and Historical Research Center, which houses the Sumter County Genealogical Society upstairs and the Sumter County Museum Archives downstairs, opened in this historic building in January of 1994.

Usual charges start at a $20.00, a nonrefundable deposit which also covers
the first hour of research. Copies and mailing charges are extra.
It is very important to make your request as specific as possible,
 providing all relevant information.


The research center is closed for all major holidays.

The objectives of the Sumter County Genealogical Society are to raise the standard of genealogical research and stimulate interest in genealogy through educational programs, workshops, publication of a newsletter, and collecting and promoting the collection of early records.
